It’s official: July 10th is Hump Day.
After tantalizing audiences with its just-over-the-line awkward sexuality at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, Lynn Shelton’s “Hump Day” is getting a limited theatrical release.
The story chronicles the relationship between two old college buddies who rediscover each other in their thirties. One has settled down to family life, while the other has adopted the Bohemian traveler lifestyle. After a long night of drinking, the friends are dared to make a porn film with one another. Refusing to back down, the two men are suddenly confronted with the challenge of actually having to make love on camera. Will they do it? Won’t they? You'll have to see it to find out.
Director Lynn Shelton made quite a stir in Utah, winning herself a Special Jury Prize as well as the affections of a number of big-time talent agencies. She eventually landed at United Talent, where she’ll be mentored by the same agents that produced Judd Apatow and most of the current Saturday Night Live crew.
The film is marvelous. Who’d a thought such a small movie could produce such big laughs? The awkward tension spills off the screen and into the laps of the audience, highlighted by a breakout performance by Joshua Leonard as the Bohemian.
If you’re looking for family fun, you might want to avoid this one. But if you’re looking for a refreshingly honest take on male sexuality in a way that isn’t preachy or judgmental, then check out “Hump Day.”
And even if you don’t end up liking it, at least your friends will think you’re hip for seeing a film with “Hump” in the title.
