Lock the doors and hide the children: on June 12th, the Nazi zombies will be unleashed.

Veteran indie distributor IFC has purchased the rights to “Dead Snow,” a Norwegian comedy horror film from director Tommy Wirkola. The film premiered to strong audience response at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is poised to garner a huge cult following when it hits screens in two weeks.

The plot revolves around a group of Norwegian medical students who go away for vacation in a cabin up in the mountains. The region in which they are staying was raped and pillaged by the Nazis during the Germany occupation of Norway during WWII until the locals chased the villains up into the mountains where they supposedly froze to death.
The Nazi zombies wake up and carnage ensues.

The film is ridiculous in the best possible way. The students and zombies take turns slaughtering each other with hilarious and gory results. While certainly not for the faint of heart, the movie is genuinely funny in a sort of “Scream” meets “Itchy and Scratch” sort of way.

Young Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola, who turns 30 this year, is an up-and-comer who just sold a pitch to Will Ferrell’s production company, Gary Sanchez Productions. The film is called, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” and explores how things played out for the poor siblings 15 years after that whole gingerbread house incident. Simply put, they’re now specialized bounty hunters looking to put down the cackling black-hat set.

“The idea is, they’ve grown up and they hunt witches,” said Adam McKay, the head of Gary Sanchez Productions, in an interview with Yahoo.com. “It’s a hybrid sort of old-timey feeling, yet there’s pump-action shotguns. Modern technology but in an old style. We heard it and we were just like, ‘That’s a freakin’ franchise! You could make three of those!’”

For now, Wirkola is focused on ensuring “Dead Snow” opens well on the twelfth. Although, if it gets the kind of word-of-mouth buzz that it got in Sundance, that shouldn’t be a problem.
