So You Think You can Dance? Is just one of many reality shows allowing people to show off their secondary “skills.” As time has gone on, it seems as if professional athletes need a show that allows them to showcase their otherworldly talents in fields unrelated to their day jobs. Whether it be Brock Lesnar (football before his conversion to MMA), Ron Artest, Carl Lewis, or Shaq (music), or Michael Jordan (baseball), numerous pro athletes have felt pretty confidently that they could easily slide into another high profile position with ease, regardless of how little it has in common with what they currently do to rake in the dough. Now, you can count the ever-mystifying Big Baby Davis among the group, as he recently revealed his strong desire to enter the NFL.
Maybe Baby is simply talking without thinking? He clearly has a lot of time on his hands, and maybe he didn’t want people to take him seriously? Maybe he just ran out of basketball-related things to talk about? Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that any of these excuses are the case. Baby feels that he can be a successful NFL player, has a passion for the sport, and will only allow himself to enter the No Fun League after he has reached his basketball goals of becoming a “great player,” and an “All Star.” He readily admitted that this will be far off, since the Celtics’ immense depth at his position (plus his untimely injury derailed the start of his season) will prevent him from becoming the player that he plans to become for a while.
Now that Baby has gotten this out into the open, how do the Celtics and their fans react? With disdain? Or do they simply ignore it? Or do they laugh it off? I’m somewhere in between options A and B. Davis has shown his immaturity more times than necessary during his short stint in Boston (crying on the bench, his lack of focus on the floor, his injury right before the season opener) and this piece of news doesn’t help. After the injury, Wyc said, “I've had enough of 'Big Baby,' so I'm going to start calling him Glen.” I couldn’t agree more. It’s time for Davis to stop living up to his basketball moniker. You can say what you want, that Davis lives in a free country, or that he won’t be playing in the NFL until after his days in Boston are over (thus, who cares), and that this is a non-issue. But alas, it isn’t. The only way Davis can play in the NFL is by quitting basketball and his primary focus at this time should be his recovery and the team. Nothing else, besides family of course. Now we have him talking about a desire to play another sport, which coincidentally would force him to stop working for his current employer, the Boston Celtics. Wyc, Doc, and Danny shouldn’t take these comments lightly, and Big Baby needs to grow up.
