Just the other day I was doing my weekly errands- popping into the same few stores to browse (and usually purchase) my usual necessities. You know, stopping at Chipotle to pick up a Veggie Burrito, checking out Old Navy to see if I absolutely must have anything, and wandering aimlessly through Borders, where I typically spend far too much money on books that I could have easily checked out at the library. Anyway, while I was meandering about this literary powerhouse, not only did I decide to buy about six books too many (leaving my wallet barren, yet again), but I stumbled across the Food & Drink section. Usually when I make these trips to Borders, I open the huge wooden doors, walk in, and bam! Those front tables of must-reads lure me in, and any chance of leaving empty-handed becomes laughable. I guess I am a sucker for those two-for deals, alleged must-reads, and not having to walk very far into the store to find something.

While scavenging around, I came across the Food & Cooking section after I had raided the front tables. Ironically, and I am not just saying this for dramatic effect-- the very first book I picked up in this unfamiliar part of Borders was a vegetarian recipe guide. I skimmed over the sideways titles of each row in the wall of hardbacks directly in front of my face. They were all vegetarian books! I became immersed. I sat down on the floor and started to peruse through the compilation starring me right in the eye. I was amazed at all the different genres of books—and they were all about vegetarianism! I had to have one, but since I had already gathered the amount of money I would be spending on the pile of must-reads I had already snatched, I knew I had to be frugal. In the midst of all these macho hardbacks was a smaller green book, and it was flimsy. To any struggling college student, paperback books = cha-ching; they are always so much cheaper than the big daddies of books— hardbacks. It was a decent width, so I knew it had some substance to it, and it was one of the very few paperbacks I had seen. Perfect. The title “Ok, So Now You’re a Vegetarian” had me 100% sold.

So, I got home with the intentions of cooking up a storm and becoming a vegetarian chef instantaneously. However, it did not quite happen like this. It was one of those things where I had every intention of taking the challenge a bit, in this case it was being kitchen-proactive—but instead I was lazy for a few days and set the book aside, going about my normal routines, forgetting about my culinary experimentations. Now, for all of you who are not familiar with Cleveland weather, take one trip here and you will realize the weather is all but consistent. More times than one, there has been a blizzard while little kids are foraging for Easter eggs or even two or three feet of snow on Halloween night. Anyways, for once in my life, the random monsoon and 60-degree weather during summer time was actually a good thing—one day last week as I was moping around the house bumming out because of the chilly weather and rain, I decided to pull out that cookbook and maybe give something a shot. I attempted the Pad Thai, and it was a huge hit! It was easy, flavorful, and compliment-worthy! Thanks to the author, Lauren Butts, I have found that majority of the recipes in the book are impressively tasty and appear very advanced, and they are also easy! Shocking, but awesome!

The cookbook is written in a very uncomplicated manner, and for the cooking-clueless, you cannot go wrong! Every recipe I have tried has worked out well, and because of the easiness, I have started to really enjoy cooking! I highly recommend this book to anyone—vegetarian or not, it is a great way to mix up dinner or prepare a no-problems entrée for a large group!
