Veteran comicwriter John Ostrander is finding a battle to save his eyesight.
A long-time sufferer from glaucoma, Ostrander has been fighting the disease for years. In the most basic explanation of the affliction, glaucoma causes fluid build up in the eyes that eat away at the optic nerve. Several medicines are available which help to reduction the fluid pressure but Ostrander has had allergies to some and has developed resistence to others.
In order to savehis eyesight, Ostrander underwent a surgical procedure called Glaucoma Filtration Surgery (trabeculectomy) and has had some strong response to the operation. Unfortunately, even though he has health insurance, Ostrander's insurance will not pay the entire bill leaving him responsible for extra costs including the travel and expenses for getting to Boston for the procedure..jpg)
To help this talented writer, the Chicago Comic-Com (together with Wizard Entertainment) will be holding a charity auction during the upcoming Chicago convention on August 8th. The auction is hoping to raise enough funds to cover the costs of the treatment and, in the event that extra funds are raised, Ostrander has asked that they be donated to The Hero Initiative which is a charitable group helping comic creators often left penniless in their later years.
John Ostrander is a Chicago native who rose to prominence with one of the first independent comic publishers, First Comics, with his series Grimjack. Ostrander went on to work on several titles including Suicide Squad for DC Comics. His work was innovative and fresh and he provided a unique voice to the independent comic explosion of the 1980s.
