Outrageously, Antonio Ray, the man accused of dragging a pit bull to death in Ardmore, Oklahoma, has been found “not guilty.” According to Austin Wright from KXII, Ray was arrested in March 2009 for allegedly dragging the dog almost 377 feet while riding a bike - which needless to say resulted in extreme trauma to the dog’s chest and paws. Ray claimed he thought the dog was running behind him - really, even if that was true, does that make it OK?
Despite Ardmore residents’ hopes that Ray would get the maximum sentence, the court found this alleged perpetrator of animal abuse innocent. So much for the nearly 7,000 signatures that requested Ray receive five years in state prison.
Now would be a good time to scratch your head or bang it against a wall if you’re trying to figure out why the court would let a crime like this go unpunished. Guess Oklahoma is not OK after all. According to Wright, Ray thought the dog was more trouble than he was worth and tried to deliver the dog to the city pound – hmm, what about a car?
According to reports, John Randolph, a detective at the Ardmore Police Department, had hoped the case would be worked out - meaning an appropriate sentence would be set; however, that failed to happen. Come on Ardmore, what does a person have to do to get sent to jail? What people might not know is that animal cruelty is often the first step when it comes to criminals. They start out with animals but later go on to bigger crimes like serial murders.
So the next time you think it’s no big deal that someone abuses an animal, you might want to think about what it would feel like if your body was dragged to death, starved to death, electrocuted, or beaten to death?
