Puppies need to learn where to pee!
Teach the right place to pee early on, whatever the season!

You know those businesses where you to drop your business card in a jar to become eligible for a prize? You do it because it’s fun to win random free stuff and they do it to stuff a mailing list for business purposes.

Business cards include relevant information like your name, business name, contact information, a logo or some image to invoke whatever you’re trying to sell – be it product or services or both. Business networking organizations flourish in the tenet that word of mouth marketing is best. Members have business card holders to make it easy to keep a handle on a constantly growing card list.

Dogs think of the whole world as an opportunity for random fun stuff and the planet is their place to do their business – literally and figuratively, by marking vertical objects to advertise. They could be advertising their territory and playing oneupsdogship (me pee is the last one, I win!). Dog pee sends chemical scent-messages telling other dogs everything they need to know including their regular hang outs and social order, current health status, and in the case of intact females, sexual receptivity.

Marking is perfectly normal, natural and instinctive.  In male dogs it involves leg lifting and spray on a vertical surface and in the case of more dominant females, a squat spray with the same effect.

It’s another one of those subjective things about whether where the dog is marking that it’s okay to their humans or not. Marking on a tree is different than marking on the car tire or worse yet, marking on Uncle Elmo, your sofa or your inside wall.

If your dog is marking in your house or when you visit other people’s houses with him, this inappropriate peeing needs to be addressed. Knowing the source of the marking is important in coming up with a proactive treatment plan, but the first place to start is managing that the behavior doesn’t happen. It may be that your dog is developmentally delayed or You either observe the dog 24/7 or for the more common male dog that indoor marking occurs, you use a belly band.

Some dogs only need to soil on themselves once or twice before they give up the ghost, some might need ongoing management, especially when the triggers the incite the reaction (visitor to the house, going somewhere new, birth of baby, suitcase in the foyer, other novel things). Neutering is a big help but not the be all end all fix everything solution (yet another reason why you should spay and neuter your dogs!).

Use products designed to eliminate scents rather than mask them and if the problem persists, don’t despair. Find a trainer experienced with these problems and get help! Throwing out the baby with the bathwater is not the way to go!
