Bob waiting for a weather break under the front step eaves.
Bob contemplating the rain from the safety of porch overhang.

“Rain rain go away, come again some other day.”

What I say when we have many consecutive days in a row of weather that positively wilts my spirit not to mention my hair.

But I do want to make it clear that back in the day when my dogs were not house trained, when they were mere pups who balked at inclement weather, I made great efforts to bundle up and take them out and cheerfully implore them to pee or poop OUTSIDE. It was ugly work, but then again, so were a lot of those diapers back when my kids were little and now they help take out trash occasionally. Even in the rain/sleet/hail/heavy snow my dogs perform and the payoff is they now go out without me. Maybe their submissive posturing as they slink outside suggests dismay, but trust me, they go out and do it. Come right back in and resume their relaxation mode.

So for all you with older pups and dogs experiencing “accidents”, on inclement weather days especially, take heed. It’s not impossible to rewire your dog’s brain. Just put on the right clothes and perhaps an umbrella, put on a happy face, and cheerfully tromp on out to the potty area and cheer your canine on. Reward for a job well done with fun indoor rainy day activities and in no time, you can say goodbye to accidents.
