We’ve all heard about service dogs, but cats seem to get a bum rap. “Cat people thrive on rejection,” observed one cat owner on PBS’s documentary, ‘Why we Love Cats and Dogs.’ But is that really true?
Last year’s ASPCA ‘Cat of the Year’ was Libby, a 10-year-old tabby, who served as a guide cat to a blind pooch named Cashew. Libby helped her canine companion accomplish daily tasks, steered Cashew away from bumping into things and patiently guided the dog to her food. Libby was a true friend and hero to Cashew, and their deep-rooted friendship showed that animals of different species can understand and help each other overcome any obstacle.
This year’s award for Cat of the Year will be given on October 29, at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, at a special luncheon. Nominees are now being sought. Do you have a cat who has demonstrated “… extraordinary efforts on behalf of humans or engaged in animal heroism during the past year?” If so, consider telling your story.
You and you tabby might win a trip to New York City.
