Hubby and I were driving along Ridge Road, to the C.V.S. store at the corner of Regency Park Blvd, to pick us some milk. We drove along the little parade of shops and I noticed a 'Now open' sign on a sandwich shop. I wanted to check it out.
It is called Sandwich City, and if you can remember back, it was the old Subway store.
The moment I opened the door I was greeted by a face from my past. Pete Frigano, and his charming wife Grace, now own the shop. It is family operated with their son working to.
Even though the set up in like a subway store, the shop is fresh, clean, and inviting. Behind the counter is a board with their menu items on it. To the side are the specials.
While talking to Pete, I found out that the sandwich shop has been open a month, and that people from the local businesses, are coming back time and time again, for their food. He prides himself on the Chicago Hot Dogs, which are 100% Vienna beef, and also the Dietz and Watson deli meats. He buys only the finest quality products.
Sandwich City's menu is simple, Gourmet Deli Sandwiches @ $6.75. These are served on white, wheat, deli rye, pumpernickel, or a kaiser roll. There are regular sandwich for $4.95. For the small palette, they offer 1/2 a sandwich with either a small garden salad, or soup. If you fancy paninis or wraps they looked delicious too. They even have bagels with 6 different kinds of filling for the breakfast lovers.
With all new places you want to know what is good, and I was told to try the Gourmet Reuben sandwich, and the Chicago Dog @ $3.25. Lucky for me I had hubby with me.
The Reuben sandwich was a nice size, as you can see in the picture. The flavors of the ingredients blended well together, and it tasted authentic. My husband ate most of the Chicago Dog, but I had to try it too. Some hot dogs are so bland, and that is one reason why, I don't normally eat them. However, this one had a 'bite' to it, coupled with the mustard, nuclear relish, chopped onions, tomato wedges, pickle spears, sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt.
They also pride themselves on their excellent soups. The day we were there they were potato and Manhattan Clam Chowder.
Right now the shop is open from 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m,. Mondays through Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays. Their plan is to add more items to the menu, more specials, and to stay open longer hours.
