Rich Aurilia, one of the older Giants’ infielders, filed for free agency on Friday, October 31.
Aurilia, a career .277 hitter, has been a familiar face in a sea of youngsters on the Giants team. A Giant from 1995-2003 and 2007-present, fans found comfort when he walked up to the plate. With “No Sleep ‘til Brooklyn” blasting on the PA system, there were moments when Aurilia was looked upon to give the Giants an offensive boost—which can be looked at as a positive or negative.
With 10 home runs, Aurilia was one of only five players to reach double digits. The offensive struggles were shared throughout the lineup, but more was expected from the veteran. It was difficult justifying his paycheck in 2008, as he earned $4.5 million (seventh highest on the payroll).
With the influx of young players, such as Emmanuel Burriss, Ivan Ochoa, and Pablo Sandoval, coming up this year, it would be difficult not to notice the inevitable changing of the guard.
It’s sad, but it’s time to bid Aurilia adieu. There are many teams who are in need of a strong first baseman and they will find may find that in him. He will be remembered as one of the greatest Giants, but Aurilia’s move to file was best for both parties.
