With no more games to obsess over in 2008, baseball has now shifted gears toward spreading the oh-so-popular free agency and trade rumors.

One rumor floating around above all others is that the San Francisco Giants have their eyes on Rafael Furcal.

Like many of the players testing the hot stove temperature, Furcal is said to be looking for a club to offer him a long-term deal. He wants to remain in Dodger blue, but they may not be willing to provide him with the four-year deal he is seeking.

He had back surgery in July and only played 36 games. Injury-prone and 31 years old, is this Furcal the answer?

Another question that seems to come up a lot is whether Matt Cain will remain a Giant.

Although he didn’t have the year that Tim Lincecum had, Cain is a valuable commodity. The team needs hitters, but shouldn’t weaken its strength by letting him go. Giants general manager Brian Sabean even went so far as to say that Cain is “untouchable.”

Other whispers circulating:

  • Giants may be peeking in on hometown players on the Phillies roster, Jimmy Rollins and Pat Burrell.
  • Juan Uribe is looking like a possibility.
  • Can Aaron Rowand be on his way out?
