In a game fueled with emotion and home runs, the San Francisco Giants reminded baseball aficionados that the potential for October play is there.
The Giants, led by starting pitcher Brad Penny, beat the San Diego Padres 9-4. Penny showed fire on the mound—both through his pitches and his emotions. As San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez admired his home run from the plate, a clearly disapproving barked choice words at the first baseman while he trotted around the bases. Penny put his feeling on display at the end of the inning as he struck out Will Venable by punctuating the out with a few arm pumps and a yell amplified by confidence and excitement.
San Francisco's offense always seems to be rejuvenated in the familiar wall of home, where the Giants are 45-21. Juan Uribe went yard twice, going 3-for-4 and batting in five runs. Second baseman Freddy Sanchez made his return from the disabled list and continued to get on base as he went 2-for-4.
The Giants remain two games behind the NL Wild Card leading Colorado Rockies.
