SAN FRANCISCO---Not too long ago, word around town was that the San Francisco Giants’ top prospect Buster Posey would not get a taste of the majors until 2010. September arrived and that declaration was erased.

Various elements—namely a sluggish offense and, more importantly, an injured Bengie Molina—sped up the ascension of the young catcher. While he occupied a spot on the roster, before the series against the Dodgers began, he had yet to step up to the plate.

In Friday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a series of events led to the home crowd in AT&T Park becoming first-hand witnesses in Posey’s first Major League at-bat.

“It was the perfect opportunity to get Buster out there to make his debut.” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.  “I‘m sure he was a little nervous but it was good to see him out there.”

While the stars did not align for the Giants as they were trampled on in their 10-3 loss to the Dodgers, the blowout made way for the rookie’s first appearance in the eighth inning.

“When you get down like that, sputtering offensively, I just decided to take guys out and out some fresh young guys out there,” Bochy explained.

With the announcement of Posey’s name as the next batter, fans in AT&T Park rose and applauded the catcher even before he took his first swing. The standing ovation lavished upon Posey was sprinkled with hope and good intentions for the player seen as a key element of the Giants’ future.

“I don’t know if you can really dream up a first at-bat much better than that—other than getting a knock,” said Posey. “That’s the way it goes sometimes and I just got to keep on working.”

Posey’s at-bat resulted in a strikeout—a missed opportunity—yet it remains a priceless memory for the 22-year-old.

“It’s my first at-bat, I’ll never get that back again,” Posey said as he recalled his experience. “The crowd was great, they made it fun for me. I’ll cherish that for sure.”

Fans continue to be enchanted by the rookie magic that surrounds Posey—despite the half-hearted check-swing strikeout in his debut.

“That’s baseball. It’s one of those things,” Posey said. “Hopefully I’ll have many more at-bats to come.”
