On Friday, July 10, history was made in AT&T Park. San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez threw the team’s first no-hitter in 33 years. The game versus the San Diego Padres—an almost perfect game, if it weren’t for an error committed by Juan Uribe—was one that came from chance.
Pitcher Randy Johnson should have been on the mound, but he has been sidelined with a shoulder injury. The struggling Sanchez has been spending time in the bullpen, but with the injury to the Big Unit, was inserted to take his place.
“It’s awesome. I can’t believe I just threw a no-hitter after I’ve been struggling the whole year,” Sanchez said after the game. “Hopefully, next start it will get better.”
One can’t do much better than a no-hitter. The only thing that could have made the night move a notch up would be to earn a perfect game. Uribe, still struggling with the knowledge that he prevented the perfect game from happening, has apologized, but Sanchez doesn’t feel there’s a reason to apologize.
“The error, that happens in the game,” Sanchez said. “You’re never going to throw a perfect game all the time. After the error I said I just got to keep throwing my pitches, that’s what I did.”
There to witness his son’s first start after being demoted to the bullpen, Sanchez’s father was expressive throughout the game. Another piece that fell into place, the no-hitter was the first game that Sanchez’s father has seen he son pitch as a Major League starter. The image of the pitcher embracing his tearful father following the game was one of the more poignant moments of the evening.
“He’s seen me pitch out of the bullpen,” Sanchez said. “Out of the rotation, he’s never seen me, this is his first time he was here. I won the game, I was pumped up, I want to just pitch. He’s here for a reason.”
Sanchez will get another opportunity to prove himself as he is slated to remain in the rotation for the time being
