Although many find the World Series dull if their team is not in contention, there was cause for the Bay Area to be interested in Game 1 of the 2009 World Series—C.C. Sabathia of the New York Yankees and Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Both players are native to the Bay Area and play key parts in their team’s success.
Sabathia, a native of Vallejo, Calif. and graduate of Vallejo High School proved to be an important acquisition for the Yankees. The 2007 AL Cy Young winner has emerged as the Yankees’ ace and has not disappointed them in the postseason. In his four 2009 playoff appearances, he has earned a 1.52 ERA while holding hitters to a .196 BA. He earned a win in every appearance except for last night’s start where he gave up two solo home runs to the Phillies’ Chase Utley and was tagged with the loss.
Rollins, native of Alameda, Calif. and graduate of Encinal High School has been the spark plug for the little red engine from Philadelphia. The 2007 NL MVP made waves even before the 2009 World Series began by predicting the Phillies would win in five games. In Game 4 of the 2009 NLCS, Rollins had a pivotal game-winning double that all but shut the door on the Los Angeles Dodgers chances in the series. Last night, Rollins stole a base and scored two runs as he contributed to the Phillies 6-1 win over the Yankees.
Both these athletes have found success away from home, but have not forgotten their Bay stomping grounds just as their hometowns are delighted to call them their own.
So while some may find an East Coast World Series boring and distant, the Bay Area has two big reasons to be proud.
