Change the number of counts facing ex-Giants slugger Barry Bonds from 15 to 11. On November 24, Judge Susan Illston dropped three counts and merged two others in the perjury case.
Bonds’ lawyers asked the judge to dismiss 10 counts, stating the questions presented to Bonds were ambiguous, but only one was dropped for ambiguity. The other two were dropped because of a vague answer from Bonds and because one count was duplicitous.
Bonds has pleaded not guilty to all counts.
Rumor watch:
It looks like New York radio station WFAN may need to get new sources. The radio station claimed that the Giants signed Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18 million deal. After the rumors began to spread, Giants beat reporter Henry Schulman spoke to Bobby Evans, the Giants' director of player personnel, who said there was no deal.
Schulman also spoke to Rafael Furcal’s agent, Paul Kinzer, who claimed he was still in discussions with the Giants, which would negate the idea that Renteria signed.
With all the middle infield rumors swirling around, which will it be: shortstops Renteria, Furcal, or second baseman Orlando Hudson? For youth’s sake, I’m hoping the Giants don’t replace the entire middle infield. With the performances by the young Giants, namely Emmanuel Burriss, I’m looking forward to what a full year can produce.
