Across the United States, there are 12 reserve banks and each serves a specific region of the country. They serve as both banks for bankers and as the government's bank. Right here in downtown Chicago, families can tour the Money Museum inside the Fed.
Ever wonder what a million dollars looks like? Get your photo taken as you stand right
beside a giant cube filled with the $100 bills. Also see other bills, learn how to detect counterfeits, get insight on the life cycle of a single dollar bill and get educated on how the Federal Reserve System impacts your life.
Guided tours last approximately 45 minutes are available at 1 p.m. Monday through Friday (or
by appointment).
In 2007, Chicago's Federal Reserve bank received and counted $51.9 billion. It also
destroyed more than $5.2 billion in unfit currency. Thus, the museum has been known for
giving out bags of shredded money as souvenirs to visitors.
