Just 55 miles northwest of Chicago in Union, Illinois, is the largest railroad museum in the United States. The Illinois Railway Museum is a great family-friendly location where a full day can easily be spent.
The location of the museum was once farmland that volunteers originally built up to preserve just one piece of train history, it grew to become the largest operating demonstration railroad showcase in North America.
The museum has more than 400 pieces of equipment and numerous displays. Kids and parents alike, seem to most enjoy riding on some of the museum's electric, steam and diesel powered trains that run from April through October.
Ride the streetcar that encircles the main grounds and easily access the buildings and historic, replica train stops.
Children who are fans of Thomas the Tank Engine™ can actually ride the train and enjoy live music, magic shows and other entertainment throughout the day on August 14, 15, 16, 22 and 23. (Parents should note that tickets are currently available and since it's a popular event, it's a good idea to grab them early.)
One of the things parents will want to check out is the museum store. Among the many offerings are a number of historic CTA signs (and at reasonable prices!). These are great souvenirs to take home.
