Today marks the 125th birthday of the first American roller coaster. The Gravity Pleasure Switchback Railway, architected by "Father of Gravity" LaMarcus Adna Thompson, opened June 16, 1884 at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The coaster cost a nickel to ride and was able to achieve a top speed of six miles per hour.
We've sure come a long way since then.
As the home of Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando, Orlando is well known for its roller coasters, with each new introduction an advancement forward. SeaWorld opened its latest roller coaster Manta this past May, a 56-mph flying roller coaster with a maximum drop of 113 feet. Later this year Universal Studios will open its highly anticipated multi-sensory experience, the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster, which will reach its 167-foot pinnacle in about 16 seconds, leading up to a flight that takes passengers 17 stories over the park and through its facades.
But that's only a sample of the thrills Orlando delivers through its roller coasters. If your goal in visiting Orlando's theme parks is to live out the best roller coaster experience ever, consider this list of the top roller coasters in Orlando in planning out which coasters you absolutely must ride during the course of your vacation.
