Water tables let children learn through play on a hot summer day
It’s hot and the kiddos are looking for something to do. You’d love for them to go outside and enjoy the summer sunshine (with adequate SPF, of course) but the thought of packing up to go to the pool again seems daunting. Parents and caregivers: meet the water table.
Essentially a low table with a large tub on top, a water table is a fantastic way to blend learning and playtime. Children can splash, pour, dribble, and dunk to their hearts’ content, while discovering key concepts about volume, capacity, cause-and-effect, buoyancy, and so on. Add a few drops of food coloring to separate cups of water, and let the kids see what happens when they mix them together. If your outdoor area has access to cement, stone, or asphalt, encourage the kids to “paint” the ground with water.
Although there are many wonderful water tables on the market, it is easy to improvise one in a pinch. All you’ll need is a large plastic tub, (you might use a baby’s bathtub, a closet storage bin, or even a plain old bucket) and an assortment of cups, measuring spoons, turkey basters, watering cans, toy boats, clean sponges, and anything else you can scrounge up that might be interesting. Take it outside, fill it up with water, and you’re on your way to some learning and fun!
