Sandoval still may find himself on the All-Star team. Ben Margot, AP

After a furious four days of voting the people, at least those with the most free time, have spoken.

Shane Victorino was elected to the National League All-Star team, besting the Giants Pablo Sandoval who finished second among the NL heat.

The voting was intense as the lead changed hands several times in a record ‘final vote’ turnout, thanks to involved campaigns by the teams of each candidate. A multi pronged approach by the Giants was aided by an international push from Sandoval’s homeland of Venezuela, and the beauty of low budget parity music video. Alas, this was not enough to get the Panda to St. Louis, yet.

ESPN’s Buster Olney told KNBR early Thursday morning that he expects both Victorino and Sandoval will eventually wind up on the team. Every year injuries and apathy cause players either voted in or selected by the players and coaches to bow out of the mid-summer classic. A knee injury to the Met’s Carlos Beltran may be the opening Sandoval needs to make the team.

Other NL candidates were LA’s Matt Kemp, the D-Backs Mark Reynolds, and the Nat’s Cristian Guzman. Reynolds did receive the endorsement of Arizona Senator John McCain.

The Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge was the winner in the American League, beating out the Angels Chone Figgins, Tampa’s Carlos Pena, Toronto’s Adam Lind, and Texas’s Ian Kinsler.
