One day down, three more to go, and countless rumors to debunk, substantiate, laugh at and pray for or against.
Sabean and the Giants should err on the side of caution.
CC Sabathia: We’re getting clearer but still cryptic signals about the Giants interest in Sabathia. As Brian Sabean told the Chronicle, “We’re not out there swimming with the sharks. There are too many teams with more seemingly to offer financially than where we’re at right now.” He followed that statement up with this response to the question of whether or not the team will be meeting with Sabathia: “it'sdebatable.”
Pat Burrell: Reports have the Giants as the favorite to land this bay area native. However, when team officials were asked about Manny Ramirez, they insisted that the outfield is not an area of need. Well, if you don’t need Manny I don’t see how you could possibly need Burrell.
Miguel Tejada: He would come by way of a trade, considering he’s still under contract for $13 million for next season. The obvious name that the Giants would counter with would be Jonathan Sanchez. I can’t see them giving up a cheap and promising arm in Sanchez for another former All-Star shortstop.
Hank Blalock: I’m listening. Health is a huge concern given that he played 58 and 65 games respectively in ’07 and ’08, but he is still young (turned 28 in November). His defense is also questionable, as he is coming back from shoulder injuries suffered in 2006, and it's unknown what kind of defensive support Renteria will require at his advanced age.
Derrick Turnbow: Not a rumor. The Giants offered Turnbow a non-guaranteed contract with an invite to spring training. With Milwaukee in ’05 Turnbow saved 39 games and in ’06 made the All-Star team, but he lost his closer job soon thereafter. He would likely decline the invite if a team offers him a guaranteed deal.
Edwin Encarnacion: There seems to be no paucity of poor defensive third baseman. If there are so many available, why would the Giants trade away something there is a dearth of (talented young left-handed starters)?
Randy Johnson: This is a deal I would do. The Giants don’t have a fifth starter (well Zito doesn’t count), and Johnson is looking to make one last push at the 300 win plateau. The Big Unit needs only five more wins before he will become the last pitcher to ever win 300 in a career. And besides, the Giants love record chases, right? Nostradamus saw this one coming.
