The Ilikai hotel, featured long ago in the opening segment of “Hawaii 5-0” (some of you may remember Steve McGarrett / Jack Lord standing on the balcony) ceased operations on July 9.
News of the oceanfront hotel’s financial woes had been in the news for months and, finally, the current owners decided to close. Of the 1000+ units, the 800+ condo and time-share units are not affected.
The Ilikai is located at 1777 Ala Moana Boulevard and is one of the first hotels you drive past when entering Waikiki. The 30-story hotel was said to be the first high-rise deluxe hotel when it opened in 1964. Rooms facing the ocean have fabulous views of the Pacific and Ala Wai Yacht Harbor Marina.
The close proximity to Ala Moana Center and Hawaii Convention Center made it perfect for business travelers. During it’s hey day, the Ilikai offered numerous excellent restaurants, nightclubs (one was located at the top of the hotel), ballroom, shops and more.
The video of Hawaii 5-0's opening sequence was not avaiiable to post but click here and you can view it and see Jack Lord and the Ilikai. The following video (although it does not feature the hotel) was fun to watch.
