Spring is finally making an appearance around Cheyenne and Wyoming. No time like the present to begin planning where you want to take your first hiking steps of the season. Since the mountains still have high snow pack, a hike on the prairie would be an excellent alternative to the cold mountain air.

To the north of Cheyenne, approximately 110 miles, is the little town of Fort Laramie, Wyoming and national historic site Fort Laramie.

Fort Laramie served as a major fur trading and military post in the middle to late 1800’s. You can walk around the historic site exploring the life of the pioneers, learn the history of the area, and meet people/actors living like they did long ago.

The park is 833 acres giving you room to hike the prairie once you check out the historical buildings and sites. The park headquarters has excellent maps and personal advice on where to explore in the area so, make sure and stop by. Although the spring can be warm in this part of Wyoming, be sure to pack extra clothes in case of an afternoon storm and include lots of water in your pack since you will be hiking across the prairie with little shade and lots of sun exposure. On that note, make sure and take your sunscreen too.

Hiking around Fort Laramie is an exceptional way to get out of the winter blues and start celebrating the arrival of hiking season. Hiking the green prairies around Fort Laramie ranges from easy to moderate and is an excellent approach to getting yourself back in shape for the more difficult hikes I’ll be writing about. In the mean time, Get Out and Hike!
