For those planning on camping at a Washington State Park Fourth of July weekend without a reservation, think again. Virginia Painter, a Washington State Parks media contact chuckled when asked what top five state park campgrounds needed reservations this upcoming Fourth of July weekend. “All of them” she stated. To gain insight into getting a campsite, Virginia took some time to pass some camping knowledge along.

Q: So, by now all the state parks are completely booked for overnight camping for the Fourth of July?
Painter: Well I suggest to go on our website to double check, but yes, on the three busiest weekends of the year, nearly all the state park campgrounds are booked up. In fact, we allow for reserving a campsite up to nine months ahead of time and for Fourth of July weekend, people are online reserving that far ahead. Many of the campgrounds were full for the Fourth two to three months ago.

Q: Are there reservation only state park campgrounds?
Painter: Yes. Although if the campground has room, they will let you in if you don’t have a reservation. People tend to reserve campsites anyway as they want the security of showing up for their long awaited weekend and getting their spot.

Q: Is there any hope for people that show up for a campsite without a reservation?
Painter: Sometimes. They can try by showing up the Thursday or Friday morning to wait for a spot to open up from people that cancel or no show. But even this is difficult as my family and I tried this once and a large line formed behind us hoping for the same thing. But if campers don’t get a site I recommend to at least enjoying the day at the state park, as we’re one of the few states that do not charge for day use in our parks.

So for those who procrastinate on their camping plans, though no names will be mentioned here, check on your desired locations for the Fourth of July, then make back up plans as needed. Otherwise book your reservation for next year this fall. Good luck!

Visit Washington State Park Reservations for general reservation information. This page also provides a list of all state park campgrounds, whether they’re reservation only or first come first served and of course if there is any availability left.
