If you are a Democrat in Gwinnett County, chances are, you have been afraid to mention that in public. The stares you receive are glaring, and the shock on most faces makes you feel like you have 6 heads. It seems as if everyone in Gwinnett County is Republican, and they expect everyone else to be too. But, there is no reason for Gwinnett Democrats to live in fear any longer.
Since the last Presidential election, Democrats from all over Gwinnett County have been coming out of the closet, so to speak; and our numbers are continuing to rise. I saw more Democratic support signs in yards, and I still see more Obama stickers on cars than Republican ones. The numbers of volunteers at the election office were amazing; and as I was giving out Obama bumper stickers and t-shirts, I couldn’t keep enough on hand. It was truly inspiring to see that level support for our party.
Our job now, as Gwinnett County Democrats, is to stay visible and involved. Our local newspaper, the Gwinnett Daily Post, is primarily conservative, and it is our job to start making headlines so that we can’t be ignored any longer. If we make it acceptable to be a Democrat in Gwinnett County, then it will be. Let’s face it Gwinnett, the rest of the country is in line with what we believe now, and we can’t afford to be timid with our support. Even during these difficult economic times, the latest AP Poll says that 48% of our country thinks we are on the right track, and 64% of the public approves of Obama’s job performance during his first 100 days.
The country is with us now. We have the national support. There is no reason for us to live in fear of being Democrats in Gwinnett County any longer. The landscape is changing.
