Earlier this week I pointed out the widespread problem that is America's "culture of belief" -- a segment of the population who shun critical inquiry. Instead, they rely on misinformation to prop up their failed cases for Creationism, a moon-landing hoax, and the so-called "9-11 Truth Movement."
And as I stated, any one of these items may have a foundation in reality. The only thing their disciples are missing is a single case or theory that stands up to scrutiny.
Of course, daring to put it so directly gets you labeled part of The Conspiracy. Subsequently, between NASA, the Bush family, and the estate of Darwin I guess I'm owed a lot of paychecks!
And so we come to another conspiracy, this one pedaled from the neoconservative cult. We've been hearing this one since before the election, but GOP politicians and talking-heads continue pandering to the most wild-eyed segments of their constituency.
Here's Chris Matthews taking on the "Obama birther conspiracy." Where, oh where, is Obama's birth certificate?
Of course, this will make no difference to True Believers. Just as the moon-hoax crowd wouldn't admit they were wrong even if allowed on the next lunar visit, the American "culture of belief" never lets facts get in the way of a juicy story. There's too much passion and prejudice invested.
