The Dancing with the Stars results for November 10th are in and goodbye Aaron Carter!
As any fan of "Dancing with the Stars" knows, skill alone isn't enough to win the "Dancing with the Stars" mirrorball. Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff started off as the favorites, but soon proved to be anything but.
At times, even the judges didn't love what Carter brought to the dance floor and when the judges did love Carter and Smirnoff, the voters did not. Carter and Smirnoff had been in the bottom two (last week the bottom three) three times before. So it was no surprise, albeit a bit sad, that Carter and Smirnoff were eliminated tonight.
This week, Carter and Smirnoff weren't on top, but they still weren't bad. Their foxtrot received a 23 as they danced to "Lucky." Doing the samba, Carter and Smirnoff did better, receiving a 27 (nines across the board). But this was week 8 and good isn't good enough. Carter and Smirnoff were tied for last with Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson.
Say what you will about Osmond. He also started as a teen idol like Carter, and that might have been a few decades ago in the 1970s, but he had hits that were in the top ten. Carter has been more successful in the UK than in the US. His top single was 35.
Osmond and Carter have both been on Broadway, but Osmond was the lead in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and was Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's choice for the lead in the movie. Osmond was also in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" as Gaston and extended his originally scheduled performances because of his popularity. Osmond and his brothers originally began performing barbershop at Disneyland.
Carter was on Broadway in 2001 in "Seussical the Musical" as JoJo Who, but that musical is aimed at children.
Yet on the dance floor, Carter was probably the best male celebrity dancer. His quickstep and his jive were certainly filled with more flicks and tricks than Osmond. He was a more consistent performer than Mark Dacascos who was teamed with Lacey Schwimmer.
The male celebrities do have an added handicap: They are supposed to lead and it's easier for a couple to do a dip, trick or lift when the leader knows what he is doing. Carter is probably closest to Mya in terms of dancing skills.
While Joanna Krupa is good, she doesn't have the stamina for the quicker and more energetic dances like the jive and the quickstep, two dances that Carter excelled in. Krupa and Derek Hough received a 20 during week 2 for the jive. That same week, Carter and Smirnoff received a 27 for the quickstep. Weeks later when her skills should have improved, Krupa turned in a 23 for her quickstep during week 8. Last week, Carter and Smirnoff's jive received a 29 and in the dance off against Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova, judge Carrie Ann Inaba thought that routine was even better.
Yet, that's one of the problems and promises of DWTS. After all, Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas were voted off as were Lil' Kim and Derek Hough during previous seasons. The viewers votes do count.
Carter has certainly grown as a performer and a dancer. He performed well even after severe criticism and a score of 18 during week 3, being in the bottom two weeks 4 and 5 and in the bottom three week 6. You can see a score comparison below. I've also included videos of Carter's jive and his quickstep.
Hopefully we'll see Carter on stage dancing, if not in a club or ballroom, perhaps in musical theater.
