Pauline Mata

Dance Specialty: Jazz

Hometown: West Covina, CA

Currently Resides: West Covina, CA

Age: 18

Zodiac Sign: Between Libra and Scorpio, a Librorpio?

Her favorite dance movies: "Take the Lead" and "Shall We Dance?" (American version)

Pauline Mata currently teaches jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop and lyrical at the Dellos Dance Studio in Walnut, CA. Besides dancing she loves singing karaoke. According to Mata, singing is what led to dancing. "Basically, growing up, I used to sing and I used to watch old videos of the Spice Girls. My mom said singing and dancing go together." And that's how this dancer was born.

Mata has been watching SYTYCD since the first season and was impressed by the artistry of Mia Michaels. "That's when I really understood dance a lot more...how she expresses ideas and gives to the dancers a storyline so that the piece is more than just dance."

In Las Vegas, she advised "You have to have open arms in Vegas. You can't expect what you're hoping to get to happen. You just have to go through it minute by minute and see where it takes you. If you're just thinking of making the top 20, your mind is going to be focused on that and not what you need to do so just have fun and focus as much as you can."

Her longterm goal is to travel the world and teach dancing. She loves teaching everything from jazz to tap to ballet, and currently teaches people from age three to adult, but her favorite age is 7-9 year olds. "Because at that age their brain is so focused on what they do and they just want to have fun. Mata concentrates on making the learning fun for them.

Mata commented, "Watch the charisma I bring to the stage; my passion will show."

Favorite place to eat after dancing: Chick-fil-A in Walnut or In-N-Out.

Favorite place to get dance wear: Diamond Dancewear in Chino (13641 Central Ave., Suite J, Chino, CA 909-590-4445).

Mata has a YouTube channel: AlongcamePauli.

If you watched SYTYCD last night, Mata already had a scare; she was in the bottom four after dancing the smooth waltz to Whitney Houston's "You Light Up My Life." Mata was learning choreography by Jason Gilkison with a partner who had just stepped in with one day of rehearsal since her original partner, Billy Bell had to withdraw due to illness. Brandon Dumlao, the replacement, was in and then out. Ow. That must have hurt considering how much prep time he had.
