Sure, you could do like everyone else and spend your Sunday at the Alternative Press Expo (APE). Which actually doesn’t sound so bad, especially if you’re into comic art and writing and excited about meeting those artists and authors. Or you could take advantage of freebies like Wonderfest 2008, a science festival that features talks by really smart people from Stanford and Berkeley discussing topics like “Why Do We Seem So Alone In the Cosmos?” and “Are Dreams Psychologically Significant?”, as well as a ‘Mind Duel’ between high school science students and university researchers.
My money is on the Boss of the Sauce competition at Saints Peter and Paul Event Center in North Beach. Food is just protein and starch; it’s the sauce that elevates it to the higher art of gastronomy. In that spirit, some 30 restaurants will be competing to see who has the top sauce in the Bay Area. Given the location and that it’s sponsored by FIERI San Francisco, the sauce in question is Italian, as in ragu and bolognese. The first 100 through the door will be part of the blind tasting to determine the best of the bay, but everyone will still have all the opportunity of tasting as much as they care to, with plenty of garlic bread, pizza, pasta, anti-pasta, etc. Visitors will also be able to meet the chefs behind the sauces. Sunday, Nov. 2, noon-5pm, 666 Filbert St. www.bossofthesauce.org/sanfrancisco
