Mid-November and the temps are well into the 70s; not exactly a time or setting to be talking about the holidays. We’re a week and
a half from Thanksgiving and already Christmas specials have hit the airwaves, decorations adorn the department stores and several holiday events are set to take on Sunday in San Francisco. But as anachronistic as it is, these events could be the ideal thing to kick off the season and to get yourself in the spirit, however early.
Lace up the skates and start your day off in Union Square at the just-opened holiday ice rink. It starts at 10am, and though the heat might turn the ice to a slurpee bowl, you can probably cut a figure eight in shorts and a t-shirt. Union Square is ground zero for holiday vibes in the city, and with the permanent Christmas tree in the center of the square, it’s the perfect spot to channel the season. www.unionsquareicerink.com
From there, head over to Pier 39 for the lighting of the holiday tree. That happens after sunset, but beginning at 1pm is a host of entertainment activities with local groups performing traditional songs from Chanukah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. The tree will be lit at 5:30pm and promises to impress with 400 ornaments, 500 bows and 2,000 lights. It may seem a little premature, but Christmas only comes along once a year so why not pack as much spirit as you can into the season.
