Mill Valley cineastes unite

October 8, 12:37 AM

auteur Paul Schrader ready for his close up.
It’s seems just about every burg, hamlet and village has a film festival these days. A good thing for film lovers really, even if it renders the whole film fest concept less special. Still, not many can trace their beginnings to the pre-indie-film year of 1978 like the 31st Mill Valley Film Festival. And there’s plenty of reasons besides longevity to check out the festival, which opened Oct. 2 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 12. Some of the biggest reasons to drive across the bridge (or from wherever you live) are the tributes/appearances of several film icons – ‘icon’ in a Film Comment, not Us Weekly, kind of way. Last Friday for instance, the amazingly accomplished screenwriter/director Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, American Gigolo, Cat People, Affliction) was honored for his distinguished career, and appeared for the screening of his Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters.

Coming this Friday, Oct. 10, Swedish actress Harriet Andersson, a starring player in many of Ingmar Bergman’s films (Smiles of a Summer Night, Through a Glass Darkly, Cries and Whispers, Fanny and Alexander), will be in the house for her tribute with the screening of Through a Glass Darkly, as well as an onstage conversation with the film center’s director. Also honored will be screenwriter Eric Roth (Forest Gump, The Horse Whisperer, The Insider) on Saturday, and actress Alfre Woodard (Passion Fish, Crooklyn, Bopha!) on Sunday.

Of course there’s lots of great films to view as well, shorts, features, animated, foreign, documentary and independent, in several venues in Mill Valley, as well as the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael. For films and times and tickets: mvff.com

Holiday on ice

November 16, 1:21 AM
Mid-November and the temps are well into the 70s; not exactly a time or setting to be talking about the holidays. We’re a week and a half from Thanksgiving and already Christmas specials have hit the airwaves, decorations adorn the department stores... Read More

Boss of the sauce

Sure, you could do like everyone else and spend your Sunday at the Alternative Press Expo (APE). Which actually doesn’t sound so bad, especially if you’re into comic art and writing and excited about meeting those artists and authors. Or... Read More

Out with a bang: last week of the SF Jazz fest

October 28, 7:54 PM
I saw jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval perform years ago in New Orleans. It was in a tent set up as a minor stage at the Jazzfest, and I came expecting.. I don’t know what I expected, since my head was so full of the myriad other performers I’d... Read More

There are many reasons to make the trek up to Napa Valley, and most of them involve wine. And while there’s dozens of possible wineries to choose from in any wine country itinerary, most visitors look for something extra beyond the swirl and... Read More

October 19, 3:41 AM
There are an estimated 16 million people living in refugee camps around the world, and another 26 million displaced in camps within their own countries. Sudan, Somalia, Colombia, Iraq and Afghanistan have the most troubled of those spots. But for this... Read More

3 for 1 weekend fun

October 18, 1:51 PM
There’s so much going on this weekend that to hype one event over the dozens of others just seems unfair. And while there’s no way to be comprehensive about it, without writing a treatise, I thought I’d point out three street festivals... Read More
