There’s so much going on this weekend that to hype one event over the dozens of others just seems unfair. And while there’s no way to be comprehensive about it, without writing a treatise, I thought I’d point out three street festivals that are not only worthy of attendance, but are reasonably close to each other and thus won’t require an Outer-Sunset-to-North-Beach kind of schlep.
Start your Saturday with the all you can eat pancakes from 9am-11am at the 18th annual Potrero Hill Festival, which includes live
music and always stunning views of the bay. The festival runs from 10am-5pm, Oct. 18, at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House (953 De Haro St.) and features arts, crafts, food and clothing vendors and a lot of kid-friendly activities with the “Art in the Park” art sanctuary.
From there, it’s a short hop to Dolores Park and the Red Bull Soapbox Races, with the first race scheduled for 1pm. Dolores Park is already a popular gathering spot, especially on warm sunny days, so expect crowds and a lot of heart pumping action, either from the thrills and spills of the outrageoussly designed soapbox entries, or cans of the speed-infused sugary goop that is sure to be readily available.
After recovering from Saturday’s Red Bull hangover, head over to Cortland Ave., in Bernal Heights on Sunday, Oct. 19, for the Fiesta on the Hill from 11am-6pm. Unless you live in the area, you probably don’t have much reason to visit this southern SF neighborhood. Well now’s your chance. And with live music from the likes of SambaDa and a host of other bands, along with a petting zoo, pony rides, a dunking tank and assorted family fun, the event promises to live up to its name.
