After hearing positive reports of this old school death metal band when they opened for BLASPHERIAN and IMPRECATION a month ago, I found the demo at Sound Exchange and was able to hear all three tracks in full and was impressed. WAR MASTER were kind enough to take the time to chat with us about their demo, sound and future.

Thanks for the opportunity to do this interview. I appreciate it and so does the rest of WAR MASTER.

When did War Master start, and what was your concept of the band at first?

The band started February of this year. Really the only concept was to create a crushing "old school" sounding band in the vein of BOLT THROWER.

What would you describe as your influences? Did these change over time?

At the very beginning, when Neal and I were only talking about starting WAR MASTER it really was only BOLT THROWER as the main influence...but now that has branched out to just all older sounding DEATH METAL bands. Specifically ones from the late '80s and early '90s.

You've played at least one local show I know of. Are you going to continue to play shows, and how frequently?

We have played two shows so far. Our first show was on September 26 which was the VOMIT FEST with IMPRECATION and BLASPHERIAN. The next show was the day after with DESTROYER 666 at the White Swan.

Yes, we do plan to play more shows, but only after some recording is done. There is a show coming up though. It's in December at  NOISE FEST at the White Swan. Can't remember the day.....stay tuned and I will get that info. to you as soon as possible. (Editor: Looks like December 5-6.)

Are there plans for a full-length album?

Yes, there are plans for an LP which we are currently writing for. But before that comes out a single will be recorded and distributed first. A teaser of sorts while the full length is being written.

Do you think there's an old school death metal revival and if so, are you part of it?

Yeah I guess you could say that. There is some what of a revival but really I have always been into this shit. I mean. I think I see what you're saying though. Five years ago nobody gave two s%$!s about DEATH METAL even in the underground it was all THRASH METAL. Is WAR MASTER a part of it? I guess. I mean, we do what we do and nothing out side of that really affects it.

I think its cool if it becomes a huge movement again and we get caught up in it, but what made that s%$! special back then is that it was new and fresh and no one heard that kind of s%$! before. So Its really to me all about good metal in general and WAR MASTER writing good DEATH METAL songs and not paying attention to what is popular at the moment.

Has your songwriting or musical ability developed since the demo? Will new material be like it?

It's getting heavier that for sure! I think everyone into the band will be pleasantly surprised when the album comes out...that's all I have to say about that!

What should someone who has heard and liked the "Chapel of the Apocalypse" demo look forward to, and can you tell us what are the next steps for War Master?

More heaviness...the next steps for us? WORLD DOMINATION!

You can get the WAR MASTER demo "Chapel of the Apocalypse" for $4 at Sound Exchange or order it from the label, Torture Garden Picture Company.
