There’s a fig jam in Del Ray – located many miles from my house – that’s worth the trek every time I run out of the stuff.
I’m sure similar jams can be found in other specialty grocers. But the kind at Cheesetique is absolutely superb. And, see, I’d tell you its name, but I’m afraid it’ll go away.
Recently, I had to stock up again.
Cheesetique sits in this pocket of Alexandria that’s trendy and loaded with great food and boutique shops.
My favorite taco salad can be found at Taqueria Poblano. The cebollitas (charcoal-grilled baby onions) there are out of this world.
When I’m in the neighborhood, and I’m dying for ice cream, I go to The Dairy Godmother.
Chocolate? The ACKC (Artfully Chocolate Kingsbury Confections).
Comfort food? Del Merei Grille.
Meat? As a vegetarian, there’s little chance I’d visit the local butcher on my own. However, because Boyfriend eats the meaty stuff, I plan to soon visit Let’s Meat on the Avenue.
There are so many places I could name. It’s just a great neighborhood.
A favorite local run is the five-mile Turkey Trot from the Cora Kelly Recreation Center on Thanksgiving morning. I ran it with my family a couple of years ago and was smoked to the finish line by former Virginia governor Mark Warner.
It was a pleasant surprise to find Warner chatting with my siblings in the rain when I completed the race.
If you haven’t been to Del Ray in a while, I definitely suggest the trip. Del Ray also is a hop from Arlandria, another part of Alexandria that’s got tremendous international flair.

Few things send me into complete gibberish. Off the top of my head, I can’t name a single one prior to last Wednesday. That’s when I met my journalism idol: CNN legend Christiane Amanpour. I’m still in shock. It’s because,... Read More
It’s that time of the year. Well, it’s at least approaching. This is when I collect my leaves, fall in love with apple cider all over again, and figure out the holiday tours I’ll be attending this season. Historic Woodlawn... Read More
It’s time I come clean about something. I’m a reporter. I was bit by the journalism bug when I reported my first story: The third grade class ice cream party. I was 8. Who knew that actually could lead to a career? On Monday, I... Read More
I’m a sucker for sugar. So when I discovered the Lavender Moon Cupcakery in Old Town Alexandria last weekend, I was absolutely delighted. Can it be? An entire bakery dedicated to cupcakes? Even my vast imagination couldn’t... Read More
When it comes to holiday shopping, I try to keep my eyes peeled for things that are different. My Santa Cruz brother would call this, frankly, weird. Yet, I’ve never heard a peep from him regarding hating an actual gift. In fact, he loves... Read More
Every election day, I have the same routine. I’m up before the sun rises. I pull on my sneakers and stumble across a little footbridge to my polling spot, located conveniently behind my home. I’m usually fully awake by the time... Read More
