NEWARK – A year away from basketball did not sway Full Court Press from placing University of Delaware redshirt freshman Elena Delle Donne on its Preseason Mid-Major Top 25 for 2009-10. These players come from schools outside the NCAA's six major conferences – the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Southeastern, Big East, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac 10.
Delle Donne (pictured, thanks AP) was named to the fourth team. Joining her on the fourth team, also from the Colonial Athletic Association is Dawn Evans of James Madison. Delle Donne also has been named to the CAA's preseason second team.
In five years at Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Delle Donne scored 2,818 points, making her Delaware's all-time leading high school scorer. As a senior in 2007-08, she was the national player of the year for the Naismith, McDonald's and Gatorade foundations. She was the most highly sought-after recruit that year, but she chose to step away from the game for a year and, after committing to Connecticut, decided to enroll at UD.
The Hens open their season Nov. 17 in Loretto, Pa., against St. Francis. The tip is at 7 p.m. All of the women's games will be broadcast on 1290 the Ticket, WDOV (1410 AM) and WVUD (91.3 FM). Two games will be broadcast on TV: Jan. 31 at Drexel and Feb. 14 vs. Georgia State from the Bob Carpenter Center.

UD to hold volleyball promotions this weekend
NEWARK – As it enters the stretch run in its quest to make the CAA playoffs, the Delaware volleyball team will hold a pair of promotions this weekend at Barb Viera Court.
On Friday, when Virginia Commonwealth comes to town, the Hens will sponsor their first-ever “Black Out” night. All fans are encouraged to wear black, and the first 200 people in attendance will receive special black T-shirts. The match begins at 7 p.m.
A different color takes center stage Saturday night at 7 p.m., when the opponent is William & Mary. The annual Dig Pink match supports breast cancer research. The university is teaming up with the Side-Out Foundation (www.side-out.org) for this event. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
For more information or to donate, visit Delaware's team page on www.side-out.org.
Both matches will be followed by autograph sessions, and each night will feature giveaways, T-shirt tosses and other promotions.
The Blue Hens are 15-5 overall, 8-1 in the CAA, which puts them in first place. They close out the home portion of the regular season Nov. 6 against Towson, although they are in position to secure a home match in the conference tournament, which will be held Nov. 20-22.
Tickets to both games will be available at the door and cost $4 for adults, $2 for youth 17 and under.
Gourdine leads Hornets to Senior Night draw
DOVER – It was only fitting that on Senior Night at Delaware State University, the only senior on the team, Ashlee Gourdine, picked up a goal and an assist in a 2-2 draw against Wilmington University at Alumni Stadium.
Wilmington's Kirsten Stallone scored the first goal of the game in the 19th minute. The Hornets answered in the 74th minute when Gourdine found Theresa Wappett who beat keeper Amanda Walters. Gourdine scored on her own eight minutes later, but Wilmington tied the game less than a minute later on a 22-yard shot by Klaudia Furman.
Del State is 1-14-2 overall, 0-5-1 in the Great West Conference. They head to Newark, N.J., on Friday for a match against Utah Valley, the winner of the Great West's West Division. Wilmington is 9-6-2.
