Since November is Adoption Awareness Month, I want to share some books that you might find helpful in reading to a preschooler who has either been adopted or knows of someone who has been. Picture books at their level give them a clearer understanding of what adoption is all about.
A Koala for Katie is the story of a girl who learns to deal with her adoption by “adopting” a stuffed animal that she cares for.
A more spiritual type of book is Amy Angel Goes Home, where a guardian angel shares how God has chosen a special family for Amy Angel to be adopted by.
Oliver is a tale of wondering what life would be like with his birth parents. But he soon discovers that his adoptive parents have more than enough love to fill his life with.
Open adoption is something that is frequently occurring. A good story about that topic is Pugnose Has Two Special Families, where a mouse learns to accept and love both his birth and adoptive families.
Adoptive parents narrate this story, The Day We Met You, by sharing the preparations that were made up until the day the child was taken home. It expresses the joy that the adoptive parents felt when this little child was brought home to their forever family. I Wished for You is another story told by the adoptive parents, which takes place while cuddling. Barley asks typical adoption questions and Mama lovingly answers them.
