Happy holidays? Survival Guide (part 3 of 6-part series)

November 19, 11:46 PM
by Marcia Merrill, Career Transition Examiner

Thanks to Martin for affirming that job search candidates do get interviewed during the holidays!  Read the comments and make your own.  Love to hear from my readers!

Part 3-So what if your company keeps track of both your Internet usage and how many minutes you spent on personal cal!  A friend reporte that as supervisor, she had to call in each of her 37 reports and monitor their personal calls and Internet usage!  And then, there was a huge office party with the "work family"-all one big happy, of course.  She was horrified when these same direct reports gave Holiday gifts to her!  How awkward-could be they're bribes under guise of gifts for the holidays, and, of course, she couldn't give everyone a gift!  Folks she genuinely counted as friends-al went out to dinner...in January.    They say most people will gain 7-10 pounds during the holidays!  Gyms will get an influx of memberships. . .  Exercise is a good way to de-stress.  Of course, another technique to let off stress besides exercising, may be journal-writing.Dana Knighten, of inwordJourneys@gmail.com , http://www.examiner.com/x-1044-Career-Transition-Examiner~y2008m11d17-Does-your-job-search-have-to-take-a-holiday#commentswill be teaching a holiday journal writing class in Baltimore,MD  www.collectivex.comf or calendar of events.  Look at some simple fill-in-the-blanks to some holidays at work.  I want my holidays to be...  Gift-giving makes me crazy because...You might make a mindmap as your holiday list.  Draw a circle -labed you.  Now draw 5 spokes about your gift-giving....Think of your workplace gifts-your boss-do you get something or not?  What do yqu get your immediate reports?

What about coworkers on your same level?  Do you take them out to a holiday lunch, give them a coffee place card?

Read Catherine Carey's blog on self-care-and self-care is even more in need while you're trying to navigate the holidays in the workplace.
