Instead of a tie or framed photo of the kids, why not treat Dad to a new family experience? On top of Mt. Tamalpais, in an outdoor amphitheater with incredible bay and ocean views, families can picnic while enjoying this year’s Mountain Play musical, ‘Man of La Mancha’. Remaining show dates are June 13th, 14th and 21st.

I’m a big fan of outdoor performances for families. Kids can take breaks, eat snacks and fidget without bothering anyone and there is something special about experiencing good music and performance in a beautiful setting. In addition to the outstanding music, acting and impressive sets, the Mountain Play also provides pre-show entertainment including a puppet show for the younger kids.

Man of La Mancha’ is a play within a play set during the Spanish Inquisition. Depending on the ages and interests of your children, you may want to listen to the soundtrack, watch the film, or a view a YouTube video of a Broadway production before you go. Kids and dads might want to read stories from Don Quixote before or after the show. While this is a family-friendly performance, there are some adult themes that may make some families uncomfortable.

If your family likes to hike, consider taking the shuttle bus up and hiking down. Use some of the links below to help the kids impress Dad with their knowledge of the mountain!
