Summer bargains: Bay Area library programs for kids and teens
One of the best summer bargains is at your local public library. Not only can kids borrow books, DVDs and CDs, but most Bay Area libraries offer extensive summer reading programs for kids of all ages. These programs feature incentives like prizes and raffles and free events covering almost every imaginable kid-friendly interest.
Yoga? Insects? Hula Dance? Yep, San Francisco Public Library offers it all this summer. Monsters? Red Panda Acrobats? Edible Jewelry? Try Marin County Public Library. A California sing-along? Movies? San Mateo Public Library has you covered. For teens, public library offerings include henna parties, sundaes, gaming sessions, writing workshops and a teen film festival for budding film makers.
County libraries in the Bay Area offer a 'Be Creative' summer reading program for kids and an ‘Express Yourself’ reading program for teens. Most of these programs include workshops, events and performances along with the standard storytimes, reading logs and prizes most of us associate with summer reading programs. Some libraries allow kids to sign up online.
City Libraries usually develop their own unique programs and events. The Mill Valley Library presents an event or workshop almost every day! San Francisco Public Library offers a ‘Cool It! Green Teen’ reading program with opportunities to read and volunteer for the environment and eco-friendly prizes. The children’s summer reading program includes weekly raffle prizes, events and tickets to local museums, zoo and other attractions. Just a few of their June events include a gardening workshop, a balloon artist, a Wildlife program, juggling, cooking and origami.
Visit the websites of your local libraries to view a schedule of events and take advantage of one of the Bay Area’s best bargains.
