It's sad to think of it, but it's true. Today marks the fiftieth anniversary since the plane crash that killed three famous musicians from the 1950's: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson.
The men were to land in Moorhead, Minnesota, but around 1 AM the plane crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa. All three men were killed instantly, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. There are several reasons as to why the plane crashed, but that's not as important as remembering whom these great men were.
Buddy Holly was working on becoming more involved with song writing and producing, in the comfort of his home with his new wife, Elena Santiago; Ritchie Valens was just getting started for more excitement in his career due to the success of the song for his girlfriend, La Bamba; and The Big Bopper was celebrating his 1958 hit Chantilly Lace and looking forward to more career excitement as well.
These men created great songs and today are looked up to by so many young people. May we continue to remember them and this day as The Day the Music Died, as quoted by Don McLean in American Pie.
