Every morning, at the same time and the same spot, stands a man in his 60s with the biggest toothy grin imaginable, waving at the cars that go past. If you’re a regular, you may even get the “gotcha” finger point – we got the double gotcha the other morning on the way to school and felt really special.

A friend, who normally doesn’t pass this way, initially thought he was trying to wave her down because something was wrong…silly girl. This guy is great. In fact, my day is incomplete on the rare occasions he’s not outside. And he is NOT one of those mentally challenged older folks that’s only partially aware of what he’s doing – quite the opposite.

Rather he will come right out and tell you that he stands out there in sorts of weather waving to strangers “because everyone needs a smile to start their day.” (I think I’m in love.)

Even the normally jaded high school kids have a Facebook fan club with over 100 members (Waving old man on Dean Road organization). And during the Christmas holidays, there are slowdowns in traffic as people stop to give him a card and/or a present (hats of all different themes and colors seem to be a favorite as he’s known to change them to reflect holidays and seasons – hence the brilliant green for St. Patty’s Day).

I do wonder, though, why you don’t see his wife outside too often…
