Very well, Los Angeles and its surrounding areas might not have the autumnal mystique of the Northeast, but that does not mean that the city is devoid of a Halloween spirit. Depending on the desired scare-factor, the City of Angeles has a wicked side that comes out like a full moon every day leading up to October 31st.
SEA JELLIES, SNAKES AND ALLIGATORS…OH MY!
(Halloween Fun for the Whole Family)
The Aquarium of the Pacific takes a unique approach to a normally ghoulish holiday with their Spooktacular soiree that invites kids and adults to get up close and personal with creepy sea creatures that are often misunderstood as being…well…creepy. If it slithers or slinks, chances are it will be featured in this exhibit. After learning how important sea jellies, spiders, snakes and sharks are to the global ecosystem, visitors will also learn how to protect their environments that are constantly under attack. The fun continues with vampire magic shows, face painting, and a costume contest for tykes who have come dressed as an under-the-sea resident, or in any other costume. Online coupons for free admission can be found on the website. Dates are Saturday, October 25th – Sunday, October 26th from 9am – 5pm. (www.aquariumofpacific.org)
For something in the magical, mystical variety, STAR ECO Station regales visitors with their Enchanted Green Hallows Eve celebration. From Saturday, October 25th to Sunday October 26th, 1-6pm, Halloween explorers of all ages can hunt for buried treasure beneath the cursed waters of the Pirates of Oceania, brave snakes and magical alligators when trekking through the Jungle Book Adventure rainforest, before finally taking a breath and learning about eco fuel-friendly automobiles through the into-the-woods adventure of Little Red Riding Hood. The brave buccaneers who make it to the end will not only hear a tale about the frightening effects of global warming with Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but will also get to visit the Station’s Little Mermaid in her oceanic kingdom that can only remain if every visitor respects and preserves the sea with lessons learned that day. SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES…
(Spooky Entertainment…Enter At Own Risk)
The 14th Annual Halloween Terrorfest on the Queen Mary in Long Beach is not for the faint of heart. Daredevils who enter must find their way out of six terrifying mazes that have become the stuff of urban legends throughout Southern California, stumble through Purgatory Park where Live Bands play and even visit the Fright Mistress in her little abode. If the scares have left visitors dead on their feet, the Queen Mary offers Shipwreck ‘R.I.P.’ packages…if one has the courage to last the night. Dates are throughout October. With the slogan “Live your worst nightmare”, it is not hard to imagine what awaits visitors at Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights. With Freddy Krueger at large on the Backlot, guests must brave a Nightmare on Elm Street Maze and Terror Tram before going on to survive other rides such as the Jurassic Park in the Dark – where dinosaurs chase guests down an 80-foot raft plunge into total darkness – and Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride, which is anything but a droll archeological experience.
