Motivating inmates in the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center to exercise had been unsuccessful, so prison officials turned to an unconventional idea: dancing.

Dancing provides great benefits to the body and the mind. Physical benefits  include increased cardiovascular function, increased muscle tone and flexibility, and increased energy. Benefits to the mind can include better memory (and decreased risk of Alzheimer's Syndrome), increased self-esteem, and a better frame of mind.

Inmates at the Cebu prison worked round the clock on their Thriller tribute in 2007, and prison officials recorded the results. After debuting on YouTube, the Internet sensation garnered over 24 million hits in the last two years. Other top hits have been choreographed and performed, and the officials have declared their dance program a success.

When they heard of Jackson's death, the inmates practiced for over nine hours Thursday night, taking breaks only when it rained or when it was time to eat , so they could pay a final tribute to their rock idol.

Watch the results of their hard work below, and consider what dance can do for you to benefit your mind and body.
