Baking your own ham is cheaper and just as delicious as buying a ready-to-serve one from a store. It was really pretty simple too. I used my trusty Ginny's Electric Roaster, as to free up my oven for side dishes. Just like turkey, there is an easy formula to figure out how long to bake the ham. This is a perfect alternative to turkey for the holiday meal!
Brown sugar baked ham
6-8 lb. ready to cook ham
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup apple juice
2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon allspice
Bake your ham on a roasting rack in your oven, or on a rack in an electric roaster at 325 degrees for 18 minutes per pound. So a 7 lb. ham takes about 126 minutes, but you must check your meat thermometer. Cook the ham until you have an internal temperature of 148 degrees.
Combine the glaze in a pan on your stovetop and bring to a boil. At twenty minutes before the ham is done, pour half of the glaze over the ham. At ten minutes before the ham is done, pour the rest of the glaze over the ham.
When the internal temp is reached, remove from the oven or electric roaster and let sit, covered with foil while you finish up your sides. This lets the juices in the ham redistribute, encouraging a moist meat.
Carve against the grain and serve warm!
After your meal, toss the leftovers in a baggie in the fridge. Then the next day, carve into cubes and freeze for later use up to three months in an air-tight package.
