Peopled by animals such as White Tail, the deer, Owl, Red Wolf and other woodland animals, Newton, the pig, and other  farm animals, and Trout, the fish, as well as natural elements such as Wind, and a few  animals of the two legged variety,  this book is a charming tale about anthropomorphized animals who, in spite of bad treatment at the hand of humans, decide to behave humanely.  In the tradition of migration stories and creation myths, it relates how a group of animals threatened by a disaster caused by careless people, decide to leave their habitats and find a better life on an island.

Once on the island they must choose what type of society they will have, and they choose a sustainable economy revolving around the supply of available workers and demand for particular types of work.  Their society is somewhat Utopian in that the population is balanced and everyone prospers on the island called Destiny.

That is, until the harmony is interrupted by a hum in the sky, and Eagle sounds the alarm. Fear and horror ensue when a human arrives on the island.  He is immediately taken prisoner, but some of the animals know that he means no harm.  How they deal with him is detailed in the delightful denouement of the plot which also delivers the moral of the story.   Unusual illustrations complement  the text.  The writing style, although a bit advanced for young readers, is very conducive to reading aloud to 5 to 8 year olds and would be enjoyable reading for 9-12 year olds, and young adults.

The author is a college instructor in Indianapolis, Indiana.  She has been teaching for over 25 years.  She has published articles, stories, and poems.  As a visual artist, she has exhibited and sold her work in Indiana and Ohio.  She enjoys nurturing the animal and plant life in her urban backyard wildlife habitat.
