September 17-20th is Grape Festival time in Grapevine, Texas, the largest grape and wine festival in the southwest United States. In honor of the festival, here’s a grape pie recipe that is sure to please. Preparation is very similar to a blueberry pie. Using pre-made pie crusts, available alongside the canned biscuits in your market, will speed up prep time, but feel free to make your own double recipe pie crust instead. A cream cheese crust will also work well.
Grape Pie
1 package pre-made pie crusts, 2 crusts
5 C black or red seedless grapes, chopped
1 C granulated sugar
1 T lemon juice
¼ C flour
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a pie plate with the bottom crust. Cook the grapes in a large saucepan for about 5 minutes to release the juices and color, and then combine with the sugar, lemon juice and flour. Pour the mixture into the pie plate and top with the second crust. Crimp the edges together, brush the top with milk and sprinkle lightly with additional granulated sugar. Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350 degrees and bake an additional 25-30 minutes until dark golden brown and bubbly. Cool completely before serving with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
