The arrogance and stupidity of the federal government continues to amaze me. Now that they have printed trillions of dollars to "bail out" various entities including big automakers, government is turning around and implementing something called the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) legislation.

CAFE will force automakers to make cars more and more fuel efficient vehicles, which in turn means more expense for them, less safety for us, and what looks to become mediocre sales (and a burgeoning used car market), since Americans have already proven that they don't like tiny cars.

What business does the federal goverment have micromanaging the auto industry? Oh wait, it practically owns that industry now, after tossing our children's and grandchildren's tax money at them. And we're OK with this because...?

Here's the bottom line: the government, in league with loony environmentalists, is willing to sacrifice human lives on the highways AND our free market system in order to a) make more money to spend on pork and to pay Nancy Pelosi's and Barney Frank's salaries, and b) alleviate loony liberals' unfounded guilt over America's desire for trucks and SUVs. The consequence will be a further weakened auto industry, a further destabilized economy, and a government with radical interests that has even more control over its citizenry.

The funny part is that the stated goal for this nonsense, greater fuel efficiency that ultimately decreases our dependence on foreign oil, will in all likelihood not be reached. We've been playing around with fuel efficiency since the first Carter was in office, and how much less dependent on foreign oil are we now?
