Miami is home to lots of different people: your average American Joes, lots of Cubans, Northerners that invade our beaches when it’s five degrees below zero up where they’re from (I’m one of them, just a little more permanent) and those surfer guys who don’t realize there’s no surf until they get here.
And then there’s the people you occasionally see that make you think, “What the hell?” and then you go tell all your friends, to which they respond, “Yeah! That guy!”
Miami’s best free activity is, by far, people-watching. And the perfect place for it is Lincoln Road, a pedestrian mall situated between 16th and 17th Avenues in Miami Beach and runs from Alton to Washington.
The restaurants are great, as is the shopping, but if you want an absolutely free experience, grab a seat on a bench and just look. You might see this guy who is pretty famous in this stretch of Miami Beach. Or you might see that guy who rides his bike with a rooster perched on the handlebars. Or that woman who paints herself completely white and then stands there like a statue. Be sure to tip them, of course. It’s the least you can do for all the (free) entertainment they’ve provided you.
If you can’t resist grabbing a drink while you’re people-watching, stop by Zeke’s, a small bar famous for its $3 beers (but bring cash, since the place doesn’t accept credit cards).
And if people-watching has made you work up an appetite, check out Pizza Rustica (almost right next door to Zeke’s). I’m always taken aback by the varieties they have (I had a chicken caesar salad slice once).
What a great, budget-friendly Friday night. You can thank me later by buying me a beer next time you see me at Zeke’s.
